The Watersheds and Non-Point Source Education Unit (Unit) was a successful collaborative effort between the Town of Chesterton Storm Water Quality Program and Chesterton Middle School.
This 3 to 4 week water quality and water conservation unit was held annually from 2007 to 2013 for 7th and 8th grade science students by Ms. Jennifer Gadzala, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Operator and Ms. Samantha Hayes, Science Teacher.
The Unit met numerous Indiana school curriculum requirements. The Unit objectives include:
Addressing local water quality issues
Creating awareness on personal water consumptive uses and water conservation
Defining and delineating watersheds
Defining and delineating wetlands
Explaining water chemistry in the classroom and the field
Making aware the impacts of invasive species on the natural environment and the economy
Financial support was provided through the allocation of storm water fees administered by the Chesterton Storm Water Utility Department.
